    Ellis Terry is focused on some of the most exciting technology companies in New Zealand. We are currently expanding and hope you are the right person.

    We are looking for senior electrical or mechanical attorneys to work closely with dynamic clients like Nyriad, Soul Machines, PowerbyProxi, Xero, Assa Abloy, Viz Explorer and many others. The work is highly client interactive with significant strategic and commercial input.

    The ideal candidates are senior qualified patent attorneys with electronics, physics, mechanical or IT expertise. Demonstrable performance in drafting and local client management is desirable. We will also consider promising part qualified attorneys as well.

    We focus on high quality work and take a no-nonsense approach. We are the current Managing Intellectual Property Firm of the Year for New Zealand and we were finalists for the New Zealand Law Awards Employer of Choice.  We offer remuneration packages that reward performance, and there is a real opportunity for progression for appropriate candidates.

    The positions are in Auckland and Wellington, although remote working is also an option.

    Commonwealth qualified attorneys will also be considered, and visa and relocation assistance may be provided to appropriate candidates.

    Please contact if you are interested in making a move.

    We are looking for a Masters or PhD graduate in electronics engineering, physics, mechanical engineering, or IT  (high level honours will also be considered).  A law degree would also be an advantage but is not required.  You will need to complete examinations run by Victoria University to qualify as a patent attorney.

    The role includes:

    • conducting technical research to evaluate the novelty of technology and assess the risk of patent infringement;
    • learning to draft patents and handle the patent examination process;
    • meeting with clients and assisting with training and seminars;
    • legal research and assisting with evidence in patent litigation.

    We work in a fun, collegial  environment and offer a high degree of job flexibility.  The position could either be Auckland or Wellington based.  You will need to learn quickly and enjoy working autonomously and directly with clients.  We offer remuneration packages that reward performance.  New Zealand citizenship or permanent residence is a mandatory requirement.
